We are a collaborative team that values fresh thinking and believes in mutual respect, constructive candor, diversity, and inclusion. Our customers value us as a partner and trust us to continually push the boundaries of possibility. We believe in creating technology that transforms and improves our world and are looking for new team members who share our vision. If this is appealing to you, we want to meet you.
Spectra-Physics is the Lasers Business Unit of MKS Instruments. We have an excellent opportunity for someone like you to join our innovative product development engineering team as a Laser Engineer. In this position, you will build prototypes and contribute to the optical design of free-space and fiber-based laser systems. You will work interactively within a project team and use your excellent interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively with cross-functional team members. We push the boundaries of technology to develop a wide range of nanosecond, picosecond, and femtosecond lasers that address the needs of Industrial, Scientific, and Life and Health markets. If you have a passion for working with cutting-edge laser systems, this is the role for you.
What you will do is:

  • Work in a modern, world-class R&D laboratory developing and constructing cutting-edge infrared, visible, and ultraviolet laser systems
  • Use your hands and your mind to turn creative optical designs into well-engineered systems that push the performance limits of fiber and free-space based lasers.
  • Execute a combination of laboratory experiments and computational analyses to test and validate conceptual designs
  • Measure and document prototype system performance: measure optical and opto-electronic parameters; evaluate and document results from laboratory experiments and computational analysis; generate design documentation
  • Work in a multi-disciplinary Engineering team interacting with Electrical, Mechanical, Software, and Manufacturing Engineers on new product development and to transfer the design to production.
  • Help resolve complex multi-physics technical issues while contributing to generation and distribution of knowledge throughout the Lasers group
  • Guide and train technicians on newly developed processes and optical measurement techniques
What you will bring to the role and to our team are the following qualifications and engineering skills:
    • B.S. degree in science or engineering field
    • Demonstrated hands-on laboratory experience
    • Experience handling, operating, and characterizing optical components such as acousto-optic and electro-optic modulators
    • Ability to rapidly learn, understand, and evaluate technical concepts
    • Ability to independently design and conduct experiments that validate the performance of new designs or that identify potential improvements to existing designs.
    • Experience with laser and optical component characterization tools
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
    • Ability to work self-directed and as part of a multi-disciplinary team
If you have familiarity with any of the following, please let us know:
      • Laser system characterization equipment such as: beam parameters analyzers, power meters, auto-correlators, fast opto-electronics, oscilloscopes, and optical spectrometers
      • Sub-picosecond pulse generation, measurement, and characterization
      • Nonlinear optics such as 2nd harmonic generation
      • Optical simulation tools for applications such as: ray tracing, gaussian beam propagation, fiber optics, and laser cavity design
      • Instrument automation and control with Python, LabView or other
