JOB DESCRIPTION

TITLE: SR. DIRECTOR OF HDI DYNAMICS

FLSA STATUS: EXEMPT

REPORTS TO: VICE PRESIDENT OF ENGINEERING

SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the VP of Engineering, the Sr. Director of HDI Dynamics is responsible for overseeing all aspects of Head-Disk Interface (HDI) technology in HDD, including suspension dynamics, shock response, and touch-down detection methodology as well as the thermo-mechanical design of wafers. -In addition, the Sr. Director also drives the development of these technologies, through both numerical and empirical modeling and testing. Candidates should be able to effectively interface and partner with customers by supporting them through the integration of new processes and programs into customer products as well as managing and developing multinational teams while ensuring on-time qualification of customer programs. -This position is located in Milpitas, California.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
--- Acts as HDI/Mechanical lead for TAMR integration and product launch, including working closely with teams in TDK/HWY and SAE to address HDI design issues. -Regularly interfaces with customers to address their concerns or process/product issues
--- Drives, develops, and conducts breakthrough studies in HDI dynamics and thermo-mechanical design to achieve sub-nm clearance in all customer products
--- Manages and directs the work of engineers, scientists, and technicians, including managing performance; coaches and mentors team members ensure consistent delivery of best in class products and programs
--- Acts as subject matter expert and technical guide for teams in SAE China by providing -direction and guidance for TD detection, Op-shock, and mechanical testing
--- Researches and implements new materials, equipment, or tools which enhance HDI reliability while maintaining production capability
--- Validates and tests new designs or prototypes which improve performance, yield, reliability, and manufacturability
--- Reviews and monitors failure analysis data; develops and implements actionable goals to improve product reliability
--- Develops and implements long- and short-term goals and objectives and manages progress against goals; ensures goals are met consistently per customer requirements
--- Interacts with and makes presentations to various customer groups on HDI programs and products
--- Adheres to all safety policies and procedures as required
--- Performs other duties of a similar nature or level*

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
--- PhD in Physics, Mechanical Engineering or Material Science and/or equivalent relevant experience
--- Ten years of progressively challenging experience working in a HDI dynamics in the HDD industry
--- Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Applications
--- Quarterly international travel required

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
--- Knowledge of Head Disk Interface (HDI) principles, practices, and techniques
--- Knowledge of magneto-resistance technology as it relates to fabrication and hard disk drive manufacturing processes
--- Knowledge of the principles of reliability and failure analysis
--- Knowledge and ability to use optical measurements and optics physics
--- Knowledge and ability to use Microsoft Office applications to create spreadsheets, Word documents, and presentations
--- Able to analyze data, create various reports, and recommend corrective action
--- Able to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with all levels of contractors, consultants, employees, and management
--- Able to work productively and collaboratively with all levels of employees and management
--- Able to comply with all safety policies and procedures
--- Demonstrated ability to interact with customers and make presentations
--- Demonstrated organizational and time management skills
--- Demonstrated problem-solving and trouble shooting skills
--- Flexible and able to prioritize

WORKING CONDITIONS:
The Sr. Director of HDI Dynamics works primarily in an office environment from Monday to Friday. The schedule maybe altered from time-to-time to meet business or operational needs; may travel from building-to-building as needed. -May also work in a class 100 ESD sensitive wafer fab manufacturing facility; adheres to required safety and dress standards. May be exposed to hazardous chemicals, fumes, or vapors and excessive noise from time-to-time while in the wafer manufacturing facility; stands and walks; performs various fine grasping movements, bends, and twists; operates a computer and enters information using a keyboard, operates a telephone, and other office equipment. May occasionally be required to push, pull, or lift up to 10 pounds. May travel internationally four or more times per year.
